Government Official Says MoD Looking at Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Personnel Instructed to Refrain from Secret Talk in Cars.

An defense official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible threats associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been instructed to avoid discussing classified matters in any cars.

Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel

During a recent appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss secret information while riding in Chinese cars.

He said that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, however noted that security is a issue in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, not to have discussions at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Defence Background

This revelation follows claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and cause disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been shining lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

This broader security environment underscores the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government operations, from vehicle use to discussions habits.
