British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
